Teammate Talk: Jasmine

Meet Gixo Teammate Jasmine. She’s a cat mom, mental health advocate, and fitness enthusiast. She lives in Arkansas and is proud to be a Crisis Text Line Counselor. When she’s not working out, Jasmine spends time with her partner, reads, and watches anime.

Why Jasmine started exercising

Not only was I becoming sedentary, I was eating a lot of junk food and restaurant food. I noticed that I was gaining weight, and that weight was making it hard for me to walk for long periods of time or do physical activities. I was tired of how it made me feel and how I looked. I wasn’t taking care of my body or my health, and I wanted to live a healthier life.

Discovering the tie between physical and mental health

Along with therapy and medications, adding fitness to my routine has boosted me mentally. I remind myself that physical health is just as important as mental health. I do my best to stay consistent and try to be active in some way each and every day. I remind myself how I felt when I was heavier. How working out and taking care of my mental health makes me feel stronger and capable of facing challenges. Going for a walk or strength training — even running — can be calming for me. Being active helped me quit smoking cigarettes and it helped me become more conscious of how I was fueling my body.

The impact of being more active helped start a passion for fitness and I want to share this passion with others!

On becoming a runner

In the past I would try running, but I would always give up. I could barely make it a mile. I told myself I would never become a runner. Believe it or not, now I’ve completed several 5K and 10K races, two half marathons, and two marathons. I never thought I would look forward to working out as much as I do now.

Jasmine’s advice

When I started with Gixo, I was just getting back into consistently working out. I’d fallen off the wagon for a bit. I started with a 5K class, and was far from my goal. I was disappointed and thought it would be impossible to get to 5K. Then I made a shift, and worked to enjoy the process. I’ve changed a lot since starting Gixo. I even learned to love running. The trainers and teammates are so encouraging and helpful, so I do my best to encourage others in class!
