Guide to Getting Started


While we’d like to think the Gixo app is easier to figure out than a burpee, we wanted to share a few pro tips to get you up and running, so to speak.

Setting up your settings: Location & camera

As you get started, you’ll see that we ask you to adjust your permissions to personalize your Gixo experience. Here’s why.

Location: When it comes to location services, you’ll want to set the app to “Always”. This allows our coaches and app to receive your workout stats when you’re outdoors. With this info, our coaches will know where you’re improving or where they can motivate you to do more — and you’ll be able to track your progress too. While it may seem like a good idea to choose “only while using the app”, a lot of phones tend to lock during the workout timeframe and we can’t capture any data at that point. Which is such a bummer when you’re working your butt off!

The benefits of the camera: You’ll also want to authorize Gixo to access your camera. Don’t worry, only your coach will see you (unless you choose to share photos with the class). This gives the coach a chance to personalize your experience and adjust instruction like they would in an in-person class. Plus, you can easily turn the camera on and off during class.

What to do with your phone during a workout

Charging your phone: Make sure your battery is charged to at least halfway before you start a workout, especially if you’re going to be outdoors.

Headphones: If you have Bluetooth headphones, you’ll find that’s the best listening experience. Not only will that help you avoid getting tangled up in cords as you exercise, but it also gives you the ability to tuck away your phone.

Where to put your phone: For indoor classes, we recommend placing your phone on the floor or on a shelf about 5-10 feet away, or in your pocket/arm sleeve if you’re outdoors. Of course, if you need to see a demo of an exercise or check in with a coach, you can look to your screen — that’s the beauty of Gixo, after all. Oh, and if you have an AppleTV, you can mirror the app to your TV if you prefer.

Let your coach lead the way

Our coaches are here to support you no matter where you are in your fitness journey. Sure, it can take a little getting used to have a live trainer on your phone. But once you’re used to it, you’ll love access to a certified personal trainer for a fraction of the price (and from home!). Our coaches track your stats to hold you accountable, and it’s highly motivational to have a live person cheering you on. And for indoor workouts, the coach can see your movements to be sure you’re using the proper form — with your permission, of course. If you have an injury or something isn’t feeling right, you can ask your coach to offer you a modification to an exercise to help protect old injuries and prevent new ones. Just tap on the picture of your coach during a live class to send a direct message.

Try a demo class first

If you’ve never taken a fitness class on your phone, it can’t hurt to get a feel for the experience and a tour of the app from one of your coaches in a 10-minute demo class. You’ll learn how to adjust the volume, turn the camera on and off, switch to treadmill mode, and more. The more familiar you are with the app and how it works, the more you’ll be able to focus on your movement and maximize each future workout.
