Teammate Talk: Katie

I have a busy, full life as a 27-year old mental health therapist living in the lovely state of Massachusetts. I absolutely love my job, as well as snowboarding, hiking, working out, meditating, and trying new things.

In 2017, one of those “new things” was Gixo. I’ve been very active since I was little, and was a cheerleader throughout high school and into college. While I was cheering, it was a huge part of my life and helped me stay in shape. But once I stopped, my workout habits weren’t nearly as consistent. When I stumbled upon Gixo, I had no idea that this would be the workout program that would stick. I’d tried so many things, but now I’m finally consistent about being active.

In fact, I’m not just active, I have a new love — running. In high school and college I hated running during practices. Then, after training with Gixo, I enjoyed it so much, I ran my first 5k. Since 2017, I’ve run five different 5ks and, come October, I plan on running my first half marathon. I never would have dreamed I’d get to a place where I could prove to myself that not only can I run, but I can enjoy it too! Same with burpees. In the past, I dreaded that exercise. But I went all in on the Gixo Burpee Challenge and can’t help but laugh that I’m considered the “Burpee Queen”, as Coach Ali would say.

Being consistently active again has definitely changed my life for the better. I feel strong — physically and mentally — and I always have a positive mindset after working out. It’s a great feeling to have first thing in the morning. I also feel happier doing the activities I love — from hiking to disc golf to snowboarding — because I’m in good shape. I feel stronger as a person and have confidence that I can conquer anything that comes my way.

Don’t get me wrong, there are days it feels hard to stay motivated. When I’m struggling, I listen to my thoughts. If the thought isn’t serving me well, I shift it. For instance, if I feel too tired to get out of bed, I think, “I always feel so much better after the workout, so I can push through this. I CAN DO IT!” Meditation is another go-to tool I use to stay on track and keep my thoughts and body moving me down the right path.

If I could give my pre-Gixo self a bit of advice, I’d say, “Never say never!” I’ve learned that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to and do it better than I ever did before. Gixo has been a lifesaver in terms of keeping me consistent and I’ve become a stronger person in more ways than one since I joined. I’m so grateful for this amazing app and the Gixo family!
